Experiences

by Amy Gerber

I work as a Bible Worker for the Thousand Oaks Church. Part of my job includes using magabooks to find Bible Study interests. One day as I was going door-to-door I met a man named Fredi who said he had purchased my books the summer before. He really liked books, and he said he wanted to learn more about the Bible. He told me that his mother took him to an Adventist church when he was a child, and then he asked, "What church do you go to?" I was hapy to tell him that I am a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. His face lighted up and he told me, "I've been looking around for a church, but I haven't settled an ony of them yet!" Exitedly I offered him Bible studies, which he accepted for both him and his wife!

All this time a car was idling in the driveway next door. I kept thinking "I hope a don't take too long with Fredi and miss another divine appointment." Just before finishing with Fredi the car drove away. So when I knocked on the door I didn't expect anyone to answer. I was surprised to find that the divine experience hadn't left! A woman answered and I saw her friend weeping on the couch just inside the door. I decided it would more tactful not to canvass them, so I said, "I can see something is wrong, and I just want you to know that I'm not here for you money. Can I pray for you?"

The woman who answered the door was so surprised that I wasn't there for money that she became very nice and welcoming. She informed me that they were Christians, and was very releived to find out that I wasn't a Johovah's Witness. After praying for them I asked if they would be interested in some free services that a local church would privide like Cooking School, Stop Smoking Programs, VBS, and even Bible Studies. She was so astounded that we would offer these services free that she asked, "you mean you could come and study the Bible with just the two of us? We wouldn't have to go and attend a group study or anything?" I reasured her that indeed I would study the Bible with just the two of them. So they signed up.

As I understand the woman I saw crying has had some problems with her husband, and she recently lost a child in a miscarriage. I think it was her husband driving away in the car. So in a way, the divine appointment was that the car left at the right time.

It was the first day of colporteuring on my first street. I only had like two books and I was praying that God would give me a Divine appointment. A few houses down this lady answered and at first she kinda scarred me with her big hair and the way she walked, but she ended up being super friendly. I started off with the cookbook and then I showed her He Taught Love. She said, "What does cooking books have to do with God?" I didn't know what to say. Then, she wanted to see more religious books; all together she got four of our religious books. My leader, Alex, came and explained more about he books and she told him that she had wanted to get some religious books that day and we just happened to stop by and bring her some. Alex and I prayed with her and tears started coming down her cheeks. She told us that she was so proud of us doing this type of ministry.

I thanked God for giving that blessing on my first day. Through that experience He assured me that He would provide many more blessings for me throughout the rest of the summer.
